Masquerade NYC
Mike Tyus served as Associate Choreographer for MASQUERADE, the groundbreaking immersive reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera in New York City.
Created and directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus with choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, MASQUERADEtransforms Phantom from a traditional musical into a fully immersive theatrical experience. Audiences move through a labyrinthine recreation of the Paris Opera House, encountering its characters, music, choreography, and iconic imagery at intimate range.
Working alongside Cherkaoui and the larger creative team, Tyus contributed to the development and realization of the production’s physical language, helping translate one of musical theater’s most recognizable works into an environment where choreography, character, architecture, and audience exist in the same space.
The project marked a continuation of Tyus’ relationship with immersive performance and a return to collaboration with Cherkaoui, whose work Tyus previously performed during his years with Pilobolus.
